当国内还在为巨蛋鸟巢大裤衩等畸形建筑疯狂的时候，明星建筑师们正热衷于建筑哲学和建筑理论的探讨。虽然行业外仍然把形态作为评判建筑的主要标准，但在日益严峻的环境问题面前，先行者们已经开始关注可持续发展的应用，比如 Bill Dunster 的 ZEDfactory(2) 开发的这个 ZED 项目。

ZED 的具体标准包括资源节约、碳平衡和营造健康环境(日照、通风等)。即将开展的 luxury Bath eco-home 项目使用了包括太阳能、风能和雨水的利用，以及建材的使用、朝向选择(南向)和隔热保温等措施。
